Eat Local: 10 Reasons Why You Need To

by Vincent Vitale in Education of Crickets

  1. Good for the Environment:  Eating local is much better for air quality and cutting down on pollution. Local food also encourages diversification of local agriculture. This in turn reduces the reliance on monoculture, meaning single crops grown over a wide area to the detriment of soils because of exhaustion.

  2. More freshness: Local food is fresher, healthier and tastes better, because it spends less time in transit from farm to plate, and therefore, loses fewer nutrients and incurs less spoilage.

  3. Less travel: Local food travels much less distance to market than typical fresh or processed grocery store foods, therefore using less fuel and generating fewer greenhouse gases. Some food travels miles to get to our plates causing considerable environmental damage that outweighs the benefit of buying. Some produce purchased in the supermarket or a big-box store has been in transit or cold-stored for days or weeks. Produce picked from a local farmer can be picked 24 hours of your purchases. This effects freshness and taste. Sustainable Agriculture

  4. Less waste: Because of the shorter travel time and distribution chains for local foods, less food is wasted in distribution, warehousing and merchandising. Less time in transit leads to less waste as a whole. Locally grown fruit does not have to stand up to the rigors of shipping because the produce will be handled less. Meaning you are going to get the freshest produce that has ripened on the vine/tree/plant versus a warehouse.

  5. Supports local farms: Buying local keeps local farms alive which in turn creates local jobs. The local economy is dependent on people buying local.

  6. Boosts local economy: Food dollars spent at local farms and food producers stay in the local economy, creating more jobs at other local businesses. A dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy. Money leaves the community at every transaction when businesses are not owned locally.

  7. Builds more connected communities: Local foods create vibrant communities by connecting people in a public setting. Both farmers and food producers are connected in these communities. Farmers markets are great places to meet and connect with friends as well as farmers. Knowing where your food actually comes from connects you to the people who raise and grow it. Plus kids learn about sustainable agriculture, but also about where vegetables, eggs, milk, and produce comes from.  This helps educate our children which is essential to preserving the future of our planet. Blueberries

  8. Great taste:  Committing to buy more local food leads to the discovery of new interesting foods, and tasty innovative ways to prepare them. This will give you an appreciation of amazing flavor. You can literally taste the difference in the freshness. Eating with the seasons enables foods to be consumed at their peak taste. This also allows them to be eaten at their most abundant, and their least expensive.

  9. Attracts tourists: Local foods promote farmers markets and visiting farms and local food producers help draw tourists to a region. Popping into a local farmer's market is one the best things to do to get the local taste of a new region.

  10. Preserves open space: Buying local food helps local farms survive and thrive, which in turn keeps their land from being redeveloped into suburban sprawl. Buying local gives those with local open space (farms and pastures) a monetary reason to stay alive and undeveloped.
